Surfing Ocean Bluff - Final

It was a beautiful windy day and the surf was way up along the shore in Marshfield, MA.   Yes, the sun was out!   I was amazed at the number of surfers who were fearlessly braving the waves as well as ocean temperatures in the low forties!     These athletes came and went as I painted, all smiling and exuberant with the "perfect conditions." 

I took many pictures along the way both of my painting and the surfing action.  Here is a painting progression.

The coastline varies quite a bit along the South Shore of Massachusetts.    White sandy beaches turn into rocky areas, and in one high elevation area near me, you could call it a bluff.    The beach houses in this scene appeared to be built on rocky ledges and a man-made jetty juts out from the shore.


Access to this spot is easy as Ocean St parallels the shore along this stretch and even affords parking with this beautiful view. 

This painting may serve as a reminder of how beautiful the shoreline is - usually.   In the past few days, the ocean has served up one flooding tide after another.   It will be nice to have calm seas again.

Today's paint out took place at Constellation Road in the Ocean Bluff section of Marshfield, MA.   Along this easterly facing shore, there is a brand new seawall with nice concrete steps that lead down to the sand.    It was still April so it was a bit chilly, but by standing at the top of the stairs I was shielded from the wind by concrete barriers to the north and to the east.    The surf was a bit high and provided a rhythmic roar.    I often think I wish I could bottle up the feel and smell of the air propelled up from crashing waves.   The best I can do is to share this Surf Sights and Sounds Video and do a good job painting the waves and seafoam.

Hazy, hot and humid were the words to describe this paint out.   I figured if there was going to be a breeze, it would be right on the beach.   I parked at an opening in the seawall at 13th Street in the Ocean Bluff section of Marshfield, MA.  



Seaside - Ocean Bluff

I set up facing north, a vista that included a beautiful old seaside home with a domed watch tower on top.  

The faint blue coastline jutted out a bit to the east (Humarock and Scituate Cliffs), and were barely visible due to the haze.  I used Gamblin quick dry white for this high key painting and I used quite a bit of it via palette knife especially for the high wispy clouds.   The ocean color was a pale summery green-blue.  At noon, I realized how thirsty I was and packed up as the painting was roughly 90 percent complete.   As always, I welcome comments and questions!
